Fausto Coppi 1919 – 1960
Il Campionissimo, the champion of champions, Coppi won the Giro d’Italia five times. His famous rivalry with Gino Bartali divided the nation as did his affair with “The Woman in White”, Giulia Occhini, which scandalized a straight-laced and traditional Italian society.
Known for his elegance on and off the bike, Coppi was a phenomenal racer winning almost everything: the hour record, world championships, Grand Tours, classics and time trials. The Giro remembers Coppi with the mountain bonus, the Cima Coppi, awarded to the first rider to reach the race’s highest summit.
