Congratulations to Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali for becoming one of only six riders to win all three of the Grand tours when he won this year’s Giro d’Italia. He snatched victory off Esteban Chaves by 52 seconds, while Valverde clawed his way onto the podium in third place.
Nibali was nearly pulled out of the race by his team, Astana, when he showed poor form in last Sunday’s mountain time trial. But he came back in aggressive style, winning the stage at Risoul in a solo attack and extending his lead on Saturday’s short queen stage when he dropped Colombia’s Chaves on the Col de la Bonette.
Nibali revealed that he’d been suffering from a stomach bug earlier in the race, “but it’s better not to tell everything sometimes. The last rest day allowed me to get better. I never said I wanted to go home.”
